The country road winds past vineyards and orchards to Klippe Rivier, a magnificent Cape Dutch Country House, circa 1825. This was the family home of past Presidents Steyn and Reitz and is a fine example of the white-walled beauty of the Cape. Recall the gracious past in this lovely homestead with its spacious voorkamer (sitting room) and reception rooms where gleaming yellowwood floors enhance beautiful antiques. The original "Waenhuis"(barn) and stables have been converted into six luxury bedrooms preserving much of the original ambience. Downstairs, three spacious bedrooms each have an open fireplace, dressing room and generous en suite bathroom with separate shower and toilet.

Three loft rooms upstairs are under thatch and air-conditioned, offer mountain views and have private balconies. A secluded cottage is for the more romantic. Relax at the salt-water swimming pool and enjoy the company of owls in the oaks. Klippe Rivier is on the outskirts of Swellendam, two hours from Cape Town and the Garden Route. Visit the Bontebok National Park, the southernmost tip of Africa at Cape Aghulas, with whale watching in winter at Witsand. At the end of the day return to the peace of the farm and sample excellent country cuisine and fine wines.
